ARTIST STATEMENT: Pojagi Unity Flags have no nationality or allegiance.  They do not function as traditional flags that mark separation of states and nations.  The flags’ patchwork mark unity and celebrate diversity.

The design is inspired by the Korean patchwork tradition called Pojagi, reusing silk scraps to create wrapping cloths.  The International Quilt Museum describe Pojagi as “communicating respect toward the recipient, each patch and stitch added by the maker was like a prayer of good will that would enfold and carry the gift.”  May visitors that pass beneath the flags be carried in a prayer of good will and unity.
