Join us for a 3-hour hands-on pottery workshop at Pottery Northwest, where you’ll learn to create ceramic masks. This demo will feature a live ceramic mask making session by artist, Sierra Bundy. Inspired by the collection of wooden West African masks in their childhood home, Sierra has been making ceramic masks to honor their own ancestors and hidden spirits. During the demo the audience and artist will, together, share stories, personal philosophies, and discuss how generational traumas and victories affect our daily emotions. From that, the identity of the mask will reveal itself and the piece will be formed, on the spot, with those emotions as its core. We’ll learn how the organic shapes and scraps of clay become integral in identity, and celebrate the abundance that is in what is often left behind.

Artist Bio:
An Oakland native, Sierra has been making “things & stuff” since early childhood. Sierra is a self-taught multimedia artist with a current concentration in ceramics and paper crafts. Drawing from influences such as Betye Saar and Nina Chanel, their work has an emphasis on the silly and spooky sides of life with a central theme of relatability. Since moving to Seattle in 2021, Sierra has done ceramic serveware and mural commissions for businesses such as Métier Brewery and Boon Boona Coffee, and organized and participated in several local art markets. They are the recipient of the BIPOC scholarship and Apprenticeship program at Pottery Northwest.
