Alison Grimm (she/they) utilizes bold color and form to draw viewers into compelling visual narratives about us as individuals and society. Grimm’s work is inspired by their experience as a queer person of mixed Peruvian-American descent, raised in the post-industrial landscape of Detroit and its working class suburbs. Drawing from their long standing interests in social justice and counterculture, Grimm relates their perspectives and insights through abstracted imagery that speaks to self discovery, social struggle and empowerment. Grimm works in a variety of mediums including ceramic, collage and drawing. Invoking the power of art as a way to acknowledge the interplay of our pain and joy, Grimm strives for healing while defying the forces of marginalization. Throughout their artwork and brand GRIMJOY Arts, the audience will find novel geometric designs, intriguing characters, and sci-fi aesthetics that entice and ground viewers into the underlying existential and social topics of the work.
