Sariwa Farm Art and Culture

Sariwa Farm is a Filipina farm on Coast Salish land. Sariwa means fresh in the Philippine language Tagalog. Sariwa Farm practice is one of bayanihan, a kinship network that is non-extractive and non-exploitive, their ancestral antidote to capitalism. They are focused on limiting carbon footprint which means utilizing methods that will cause the least amount of disruption, minimal tilling to preserve the diversity of organisms within the soil, avoiding chemical fertilizer that will endanger beneficial insects, with deep consideration of timing, seed sourcing, and crop rotation in order to provide more nutrient dense foods. Farming is one aspect of Sariwa Farm, the other is cultural retention through artistic and cultural events. These events include Arkipelagroove, a harvest and music festival showcasing QTBIPOC farmers and musicians in the Sammamish Valley, PeregriNasyon, a touring show on Filipino farm workers during the Great Depression, farming for youth, and Tagalog workshops. Sariwa Farm utilizes art and cultural programming to preserve language and history, and in some ways the heart of why they started farming in the first place, a way to continue the legacy of Filipino activism, language, and culture to the next generation.
