Beacon Glass Center

Starting Beacon Glass is to create a small community arts center that is focused on education, art openings, experiences and cultural healing.  Beyond classes, retreats and rentals, we plan on hosting friends from the Seattle glass arts community to come up for weekend residencies, where they can make their own work, have a small opening, and donate a piece to our annual auction. Our aim in the first year is to establish connections in the Pacific Northwest, and ultimately work on building our connections world wide. The hot shop is being built on the hillside above the islands resort, in a serene forest setting with beautiful dappled light coming through the cedar and deciduous trees. Guemes island has a delightful (10 minute long) ferry ride from its own port in Anacortes, which offers passenger and car service. The general store on the island, named Dog Island Goods (DIG’s).  It is a combination of general store, restaurant, bar and music venue.  We are working in collaboration with the owners at DIG’s to bring glassblowing to Guemes Island, and enhance the experience on the property with an arts experience.  We are also working in collaboration with the owners at the Guemes Island Resort to bring glass blowing classes to the island for a weekend experience vacation. Our little Dragon furnace from Mobile Glassblowing Studios allows us to reduce our energy expenditure and minimize our environmental impact. We are also exploring our options with glass recycling programs and local cullet producers in order to further reduce our footprint.
